What is a Tithi?

A Tithi is a lunar day in the Hindu calendar (Panchang). It is defined by the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon — every 12° of angular difference between the Moon and Sun equals one Tithi. Because the Moon moves faster than the Sun, a lunar day is slightly shorter than a solar day (approximately 19–26 hours).

There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month, divided into two fortnights: Shukla Paksha (the bright, waxing fortnight, from new moon to full moon) and Krishna Paksha (the dark, waning fortnight, from full moon to new moon). The 15th Tithi of Shukla Paksha is Purnima (Full Moon), and the 30th Tithi of Krishna Paksha is Amavasya (New Moon).

Tithi is one of the five elements of the Panchang (Hindu almanac) — along with Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, and Karana. It plays a central role in determining auspicious timing for ceremonies, festivals, and daily life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Tithi calculator?

A Tithi calculator determines the Hindu lunar day (Tithi) for any given English (Gregorian) date. It uses astronomical calculations to find the angular difference between the Sun and Moon, then converts that into one of the 30 Tithis of the lunar month.

How accurate is this Tithi calculator?

This calculator uses the Meeus astronomical algorithm, which is accurate to within a fraction of a degree for dates between 1900 and 2100. The result is calculated at approximately 06:00 UTC (11:30 IST), close to sunrise in India. Because a Tithi can change during the day, the result may occasionally differ by one Tithi for dates where the change occurs near midnight or early morning.

What is the difference between Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha?

Shukla Paksha is the bright (waxing) fortnight from New Moon to Full Moon. The Moon grows brighter each day. Krishna Paksha is the dark (waning) fortnight from Full Moon to New Moon. The Moon grows dimmer each day. Most Hindu festivals and auspicious activities are planned according to these two fortnights.

Which is the most auspicious Tithi?

Ekadashi (11th Tithi of both fortnights) and Purnima (Full Moon, 15th Shukla Tithi) are considered the most auspicious Tithis. Tritiya (3rd Tithi, especially Akshaya Tritiya) and Dwadashi (12th Tithi) are also highly auspicious. These are ideal for ceremonies, fasting, and important life events.

Which Tithi should be avoided for auspicious events?

Ashtami (8th Tithi), Chaturdashi (14th Tithi), and Amavasya (New Moon, 30th Tithi) are generally avoided for auspicious events like marriages and housewarmings. Amavasya is dedicated to ancestor worship (Pitru Tarpana) and not considered suitable for worldly ceremonies.

What is Ekadashi and why is it important?

Ekadashi is the 11th Tithi of both the Shukla and Krishna Paksha, occurring twice a month. It is the most sacred day for Vishnu devotees, who observe a fast to purify the mind and body. There are 24 Ekadashis in a year, each with a specific name and significance. The most famous are Nirjala Ekadashi, Ashadhi Ekadashi, and Vaikuntha Ekadashi.

Can I use this calculator for Telugu names and festivals?

Yes. The Tithi system is universal across all Hindu traditions including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and others. The same Tithi applies to all Indian regional calendars. Enter any English date to find the Tithi used in Telugu Panchang for that day.
